Car rental in Miami

Miami is a driving city. Public transit covers a fraction of where visitors actually go, and the good day trips all start with a car.

The toll situation, which catches everyone

South Florida's express lanes and most of the major routes are electronic only. There are no toll booths to pay at. Every rental car is enrolled in a toll programme by the rental company, which passes on the tolls plus a daily service charge on the days you use them. Ask what that daily charge is at the counter — it is the single most common surprise on a Miami rental invoice.

Getting to the beach

Three causeways connect the mainland to Miami Beach: the MacArthur, the Julia Tuttle and the Venetian. The Venetian is the pleasant one and carries a small toll. Traffic across all three backs up badly on Friday evenings and on event weekends — Art Basel week in particular.

Parking in South Beach is metered, enforced aggressively, and most hotels charge separately for valet. If you are staying on the beach for several nights and not driving daily, consider collecting the car on the day you actually need it rather than the day you land.

Day trips worth the rental

  • The Keys— Overseas Highway to Key Largo is about an hour, Key West around three and a half. Leave early; it is a single road and it fills up.
  • Everglades— Shark Valley and the Tamiami Trail, roughly an hour west.
  • Fort Lauderdale and Palm Beach— 45 minutes and 90 minutes north on I-95 respectively.

Which car

Acompactoreconomycar handles everything here — the terrain is flat and the parking is tight. A convertible is a genuine pleasure on the Overseas Highway if the budget allows. Rain in summer arrives hard and fast; check the wipers before leaving the lot.

Questions

Renting a car in Miami

The things worth knowing before you book, including who you are booking with and what leaves your account today.

In Miami

Will I be charged for tolls I did not know about?

South Florida express lanes are electronic only, with no booths to pay at. Every rental car is enrolled in a toll programme, which passes on the tolls plus a daily service charge on the days you use them. Ask what that daily figure is at the counter — it is the single most common surprise on a Miami rental bill.

Is parking in South Beach as bad as people say?

It is expensive and tight. Most hotels charge daily for valet and street spaces are metered and scarce. Worth pricing hotel parking before you decide how many days you need the car.

Booking with RentalForCar

Who am I actually booking with?

RentalForCar is an independent car rental reservation service operated by Affluence Hospitality LLC. We are not a rental company and we do not own vehicles. Your car is supplied and operated by a licensed third-party rental company, and the rental agreement you sign at the counter is with them.

What exactly is charged today, and what at the counter?

Today: a deposit against the rental plus our service fee, both itemised before you pay. At the counter: the remaining rental balance, local taxes and airport fees, and any extras you add on arrival. Nothing is added after you book that was not shown to you.

Can I cancel, and what does it cost?

Free within 24 hours of booking. After that a flat $50 fee applies and the rest of your deposit is refunded to the original payment method. No cancellation window is hidden in the small print.

Will I get the exact model in the photograph?

You are guaranteed a vehicle in the class you booked. It may be that model or a comparable alternative, which is why every listing says "or similar". If you need a specific model for a specific reason, call and we will tell you honestly whether it can be confirmed.

Do you take card details on the site?

No. Card details are entered on a secure payment page, not in our forms, and we never handle or store card numbers ourselves. We will never ask for a full card number by email, chat or text.

What happens if something goes wrong at the counter?

Call us on the number at the top of the page with your booking reference. We deal with the rental company on your behalf — a vehicle class that is unavailable, a charge you did not agree to, or a booking they cannot find.
