Car rental in New York

A car is a liability in Manhattan and a genuine asset the moment you leave it. Here is how to time the rental so you pay for the second thing and not the first.

Do you actually need the car in the city?

For a trip that stays inside Manhattan, no. The subway is faster, and overnight garage parking is one of the largest single line items on a New York trip. The pattern that works: use transit for the city portion, then collect a car on the morning you head out to the Hudson Valley, the Catskills, Long Island or New England.

Where to collect

Midtown and Upper West Side branches are convenient but carry city surcharges. Branches in Queens, Brooklyn and Jersey City are typically cheaper for the same class, and if your route heads north or east you avoid crossing Manhattan entirely. If you are flying in, compare theJFK rental centreagainst a city branch — the airport concession fee is real, but so is the cost of two subway trips with luggage.

Tolls

The bridges, tunnels and much of the surrounding network are cashless. Cameras read the plate and the rental company bills you afterwards, usually with an administration fee per toll event on top of the toll itself. If you expect more than a handful of crossings, take the toll transponder at the counter — it is normally cheaper than the per-event admin charges.

Parking and driving

  • Alternate side parking rules change by block and are enforced. Read the sign above the space, not the one twenty feet away.
  • Most street spaces in Manhattan are metered with a maximum stay. Garages are the practical option, and rates vary sharply within a few blocks.
  • Manhattan's congestion pricing zone applies to vehicles entering below 60th Street. Charges are passed on by the rental company in the same way as tolls.
  • Take a smaller car than you think you need.Compactparks in spaces an SUV will not.

Questions

Renting a car in New York

The things worth knowing before you book, including who you are booking with and what leaves your account today.

In New York

Do I actually need a car in New York?

Honestly, not for Manhattan. The subway reaches everywhere and a parked car costs more per night than many hotel rooms. Rent for the day you leave the city — the Hudson Valley, the Catskills, Long Island or New England.

How do tolls and the congestion charge work here?

Every crossing into Manhattan is cashless and read electronically, and Manhattan below 60th Street adds a congestion charge on top. Both reach you through the rental company toll programme or as a plate bill with an administration fee attached.

Booking with RentalForCar

Who am I actually booking with?

RentalForCar is an independent car rental reservation service operated by Affluence Hospitality LLC. We are not a rental company and we do not own vehicles. Your car is supplied and operated by a licensed third-party rental company, and the rental agreement you sign at the counter is with them.

What exactly is charged today, and what at the counter?

Today: a deposit against the rental plus our service fee, both itemised before you pay. At the counter: the remaining rental balance, local taxes and airport fees, and any extras you add on arrival. Nothing is added after you book that was not shown to you.

Can I cancel, and what does it cost?

Free within 24 hours of booking. After that a flat $50 fee applies and the rest of your deposit is refunded to the original payment method. No cancellation window is hidden in the small print.

Will I get the exact model in the photograph?

You are guaranteed a vehicle in the class you booked. It may be that model or a comparable alternative, which is why every listing says "or similar". If you need a specific model for a specific reason, call and we will tell you honestly whether it can be confirmed.

Do you take card details on the site?

No. Card details are entered on a secure payment page, not in our forms, and we never handle or store card numbers ourselves. We will never ask for a full card number by email, chat or text.

What happens if something goes wrong at the counter?

Call us on the number at the top of the page with your booking reference. We deal with the rental company on your behalf — a vehicle class that is unavailable, a charge you did not agree to, or a booking they cannot find.
